Pope Benedict XVI is planning to come to Philadelphia in 2015 for a world families conference. Archbishop Charles Chaput, made an unscheduled overseas trip to receive the news directly from the pope that he had selected Philadelphia as the first American city to be the stage for the event which is held by the church every three years. Pope John Paul II, who commissioned the World Families event some years ago, was the last pope to visit Philadelphia in 1979.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has announced that four Roman Catholic parishes in Phoenixville are being merged into two. As of July 1, Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish will incorporate Holy Trinity Parish and Saint Ann Parish will incorporate Sacred Heart Parish. All 267 parishes in the five-county archdiocese are being reviewed with an eye toward long-term restructuring.

The Philadelphia International Cycling Championship had the usual hold-your-breath finish on the Ben Franklin Parkway on Sunday. Finishing 1 – 2 - 3, Russian Alexander Serebryakov of Team Type 1-Sanofi crossed the line in front of his teammate Aldo Ilesic, and American Freddy Rodriguez, a three time winner here in Philadelphia riding for Team Exergy.
