Rutgers-Camden and Rowan Not To Merge, Blue Cross Reacts To Obamacare, NJ School Bus Accident

New Jersey legislators have approved a far-reaching reorganization of the state’s higher education system. But it does not include a plan to, in effect, merge the operations of Rutgers-Camden and Rowan Universities. The two schools will be able to share in health science programs under a joint board when the legislation takes effect in a year after it’s approved by Governor Chris Christie. The compromise was hammered out after legislators were advised that any plan would have to be approved by the Rutgers Board of Governors and its Board of Trustees. Both panels have insisted they retain control of campuses in Newark, New Brunswick and Camden.

Independence Blue Cross provides health insurance to more than three-million people in the Philadelphia region. The insurer had a response to Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling, upholding the requirement in President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul that nearly every American have insurance. Independence Blue Cross CEO Dan Hilferty says they are happy that the country’s first step toward healthcare reform remains in tact, but there is a lot more work to be done. Hilferty says costs of patient care is still expected to rise over the next few years and even though the restrictions in the law will limit insurance premiums for older adults, younger adults will likely bear the brunt of the increases. He says this could force younger adults to ignore the healthcare mandate.

Police say 39 children from a Pennsylvania sports camp have received minor injuries in an accident involving four school buses on Interstate 80 in New Jersey. One bus rear-ended another bus, and the other two vehicles sustained minor damage in the accident Thursday in Parsippany. There were more than 100 passengers on the four buses. The children complained of pain or simple cuts and bruises. Two adults on the buses also were taken to the hospital to be checked out.
