Lansdowne Public Library Teens' "Read It" Video unbanned

Teenagers who frequent the Lansdowne Public Library and members of the Lansdowne Public Library Teen Advisory Board wanted to create something to inspire young people to read. They got together to create a video parody of a Michael Jackson tune they called “Read It.” It was written, recorded, shot, and produced by the teens and debuted at the dedication of the library’s Ronnie Hawkins Resource Room previously the library's teen room. Three days later, on November 19th, Sony/ATV Music Publishing decided that the teen's take on Jackson's 1983 hit “Beat It” was a copyright infringement and had the video blocked. Sony said that it was not a parody but instead carried a “message.” The video's editor, Abbe Klebanoff who is head of public services for the library, headed to New York to lobby with Sony on behalf of the students and for the educational merit of the video. After about a week of back and forth, Sony finally relinquished their copyright claim and the video was restored to public viewing on Youtube. The students are happy that their months of work can reach a wider audience and that their message of greater reading and literacy by print or electronic means can be seen.
