Parents gathered to discuss the firing in June of an openly gay teacher at Waldron-Mercy Academy in Merion, PA. Margie Winters, the respected Director of Religious Education was dismissed for being in a same-sex marriage, something she told administrators about when she was hired in 2007. Principal Neil Stetser notified parents that Winters contract would not be renewed after some disagreement over curriculum for next year.

The Philadelphia school district owes millions in termination pay to former employees who left between 2001 and 2013, according to the City Controller's annual audit. As of June 30th, the district owed more than $5 million to about 1,900 employees who had been separated from the district for more than a year. An estimated 1,200 of the employees left in 2010 or before with some leaving as long ago as 2001, the audit report says. This group of former workers is owed $2.2 million.

A former Philadelphia police officer pleaded guilty yesterday to a summary offense of animal cruelty. Roderick Walton was arrested April 23rd and accused of leaving his injured dog in the filthy basement of his Northeast Philly home and failing to get it veterinary care for a broken leg. The dog had to be euthanized. Walton was charged with a misdemeanor and summary offense of animal cruelty.
