Swarthmore Fraternities Vote to Disband; Arrest in Deadly Multi-car Crash; 13yo Shot at Corner Store

Swarthmore College's two fraternities, Delta Upsilon and Phi Psi, have voted to disband. They posted statements to their Facebook pages on Tuesday night, 4/30. The frats' decisions come after student protests calling for them to be shutdown. A few weeks ago, two campus publications, The Phoenix and Voices, published internal Phi Psi documents from 2012 to 2016. These documents included jokes about sexual assault; derogatory comments about women, minorities and the LGBT community; videos and photos of sexual encounters where all parties may not have known they were being recorded - and even referenced a "rape attic." The frats condemned the behavior expressed in the documents, acknowledging it happened before their time, but decided against continuing to affiliate themselves with an organization that had that behavior in its past. The two organizations have relinquished the on campus houses they used for parties and other social events. The school has one sorority, but they are not affected, and do not have a house on campus.

An arrest was made in a deadly chain-reaction, hit-and-run crash in Northeast Philadelphia last weekend. 25-year-old Shekhroz Mamaatkulov of Warrington, Bucks County, was arrested on Monday, 4/29. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, and recklessly endangering another person. The crash happened on Saturday, April 20, just before midnight on Red Lion Road and Bustleton Avenue. Mamaatkulov was driving a 2019 Chevy Camaro on Bustleton Road at a high rate of speed. He crashed into a car waiting at the red light. He then tried to drive away, but hit another car which flipped over. That vehicle was a 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor. 48-year-old Carmen Ruiz and her husband 50-year-old Juan Lopez Rivera were killed inside. Three more vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction crash. Five others, including two children, had non life-threatening injuries. The couple was returning from a family birthday party at the time of the crash. Mamaatkulov was picked up from the crash scene by a white Lexus and fled. He was found at Cooper Hospital in Camden New Jersey.

A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot early Wednesday morning, 5/1, as he was entering a 24-hour corner store in Southwest Philadelphia. It happened around 12:30 a.m. at the Island Supermarket at the intersection of Woodland and Island Avenues. The boy had parked his bicycle outside and was heading into the store when shots rang out. He was hit twice in the stomach and collapsed inside the store. The boy was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and had surgery. Police say that at least 8 shots were fired. No one else was injured. They think they came from a crowd of men out on the street. Police are looking at surveillance video.

For the first time, the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders have selected a male cheerleader to dance with the other female cheerleaders during home games at Lincoln Financial Field. Kyle Tanguay is a student at University of the Arts and is from Rochester, New Hampshire. He was chosen during the Final Auditions on Tuesday night, 4/30. Kyle has his own website, https://www.kyletanguay.com/. In 2018, the Los Angeles Rams selected Quinton Peron and Napolean Jinnies to their cheerleading squad. The New Orleans Saints also added Jesse Hernandez, making them the first three male NFL cheerleaders.
