Lyrids Meteor Shower Tonight in Philadelphia Skies, Clear, 30s; Live Stream Video
  by: iradioal - Philadelphia, PA

The annual Lyrid meteor shower is expected to peak overnight tonight (April 21) with the best viewing at its peak around 2 a.m. EDT Wednesday (April 22). Here in Philadelphia, the forecast is calling for clear skies as a cold front moves through and the storms push out of the area. It will be chilly with a light wind and temperatures dipping into the 30s overnight, so bundle up. The night sky will also be perfect for viewing since the moon is almost in a New Moon phase. The tiny sliver of moon left will not even be visible since it will set at 6:28 p.m. on 4/21 and won't rise until 6:19 a.m. 4/22.

The Lyrid meteor shower occurs every mid-April as Earth passes through a stream of dust left over from the comet Thatcher C/1861 G1. Normally you can see 10-20 meteors/hour, but sometimes bursts up to 100. The radiant point is near the constellation Lyra which will be in the northeastern sky around midnight, but meteors can be see in all areas of the sky. Vega is the brightest star in the constellation.

The best place to see meteor showers in Philadelphia is as far from the city lights as you can get with a clear view of the sky. You'll also want a comfortable spot to recline or lie down and look up at the sky for a period of time so as not to strain your neck. A sleeping bag, pillow, and an open field is the perfect setting. Watching for meteors is a patience game.

If you can't make it outside, you can watch this Live Stream of the meteor shower:
