The July 4th weekend was especially violent in Philadelphia. Since Friday, 34 were shot and nine people died. The shootings occurred across all areas of the city. There have been some arrests and some weapons were recovered. A 6-year-old was shot and killed on Sunday early afternoon in Holmesburg. Police say that incident was an accident. A younger child has handling a gun when it went off and struck the victim. Year-to-date there have been 210 homicides in the city, a 27% increase since this time last year.

Mayor Kenney's statement on the violent weekend:
"This weekend's horrific violence is a stark reminder that COVID-19 isn't the only crisis plaguing our city. Gun violence continues to traumatize our communities and cut Philadelphians lives tragically short. Just today, we lost an innocent six-year-old child, a woman in Kensington, and a man in South Philadelphia, as others were critically wounded in incidents throughout the city. My heart breaks for their loved ones and I extend my deepest sympathies as they process this unimaginable loss. The Philadelphia Police Department is conducting thorough investigations and I urge the public to come forward and report any tips that can help find the individuals responsible. The anonymous tip line is 215-686-TIPS."

The Philadelphia Zoo will be reopening this week after being closed since March. Zoo members will be able to visit starting Monday, July 6. The zoo will be open to the rest of the public Thursday, 7/9. You must purchase tickets in advance and select a time for your visit. Social distancing guidelines will be adhered to and anyone over 2 years old is required to wear a mask. At this time, all indoor animal exhibits will be closed. There will be hand sanitizer stations throughout the zoo and all guest areas will be frequently cleaned and sanitized.

Philadelphia spraygrounds and summer camps opened on Monday, 7/6. The city operates 91 spray locations across the city. They are open to the public from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. M-F and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. The spraygrounds are reserved by summer camps from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. M-F if there is a camp at that location. One hundred and twenty recreation center camps also opened on Monday. City pools are closed for the summer. COVID-19 guidelines are posted at each location. “Certainly we have to take precautions, obviously everyone’s wearing a mask, we ask the kids to wear a mask when they’re not under the water, but we can’t lock them up in the house and expect them not to go crazy like the rest of the adults are,” Kenney said.
