PA K-12 Mask Mandate Stay Lifted Dec. 4; Woman Shot in Ogontz Store; Old Phillie Phanatic to Return

A Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge ruled on Tuesday, 11/16, that the stay on the court's ruling on the statewide K-12 mask mandate should be lifted. Judge Christine Fizzano Cannon said the masking order must expire by December 4. Last week, the Commonwealth Court ruled 4-1 with the challengers that the Wolf administration, specifically Acting Health Secretary Alison Beam, did not have the power to enact the mandate. The Wolf administration filed an appeal, which triggered an automatic stay on the court's decision. In lifting the stay, the court points to the likelihood the challengers will win on appeal and the harm inherent in allowing an order issued in violation of statutory authority to remain in force. Gov. Tom Wolf had announced last week previous to the court ruling that the mandate would be dropped on January 17.

A 67-year-old woman was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon, 11/16, by an armed robber inside her check cashing business in Philadelphia's Ogontz neighborhood. It happened around 1 p.m. at the Any Checks Cashed store on the 5800 block of Old York Road. The female owner had stepped out of the store for a moment. When she returned, she was followed inside by an armed man. He forced his way past the security glass into the back. There was a struggle over the gun. The suspect shot the woman once in the chest. He made off with an undisclosed amount of money and fled in an unknown vehicle. He is described as a man in his 40s dressed in all black. Police are looking through security footage from inside the business. If you have any information, call police at 215-686-TIPS.

UPDATE: The store owner has been identified as 67-year-old Aruna Mittal.

Following a two-year legal battle over the creative rights of the Phillie Phanatic, the Phillies announced on Tuesday, 11/16, that the original Phanatic will be returning. During the copyright lawsuit, the Phillies made changes to the costume sufficient enough to be considered a 'derivative work' and allow the Phanatic to continue to appear while the case was heard. The settlement between the team and the mascot's original artists will allow for the old design to return.

"We welcome the original Phillie Phanatic back with open arms," Phillies Executive Vice President David Buck said in a statement. "We are so proud of the 44-year history of the Phanatic and what the character means to the organization, to the City of Philadelphia and to Phillies fans everywhere."
