The Pennsylvania Supreme Court threw out the statewide mask mandate for schools K-12 and childcare facilities on Friday, 12/10. The mandate had been put in place by acting state health secretary Alison Beam in September. The PA Supreme Court upheld a lower court's ruling that the health secretary did not have the authority to enact the mandate without an existing disaster emergency. They also noted that they weren't ruling on the efficacy of mask wearing, simply the legality of the mandate. Individual schools and school districts will now have the authority to enact their own policy. The School District of Philadelphia already announced that masks will still be required. Bensalem School District is going to a mask optional policy. Other districts will be making their own policies. Last month, Governor Wolf announced that he would be lifting the mask mandate in January anyway.

Philadelphia Police took a man into custody after a barricade situation in Northern Liberties early Friday morning, 12/10. It happened around 1 a.m. on the 300 block of West Poplar Street. Police received a call about a person with a gun and a possible shooting victim. The barricade situation was called when they couldn't get access to the home. SWAT came out to assist and forced their way into the home. A 55-year-old woman, identified as Margaret Lippi, was found shot to death in a third-floor bedroom. Her 62-year-old husband was found hiding in the basement. He was arrested. Relatives, including two children, were also found hiding in a basement closet. They had called 9-1-1. Authorities are still investigating what led up to the shooting.

A groom was held at gunpoint and robbed after stepping outside his wedding reception in Old City on Saturday night, 12/11. It happened around 11:30 p.m. near National Mechanics Restaurant on South Third Street. Two male suspects jumped out of an SUV. They held the 34-year-old man at gunpoint and demanded his Rolex watch. The suspects then got back in the vehicle and drove off. They were reportedly wearing all black. The groom was not injured. Police have been investigating a number of similar crimes recently.
