Five teenagers were arrested in Newark, Delaware in connection to the carjacking of Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (D, Pa.) in South Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, 12/22. 19-year-old Josiah Brown will be federally charged by the FBI. Three males ages 13, 15 and 16 plus a 14-year-old girl were charged with receiving stolen property over $1,500. The 15-year-old was also charged with resisting arrest and criminal mischief. All five suspects are from Wilmington, DE. The 15-year-old was placed in detention. The other juveniles were released to parents/guardians.

It happened around 2:45 p.m. on the 1900 block of Pattison Avenue in FDR Park. Scanlon was walking back to her blue 2017 Acura MDX when she was approached by two armed men. One took her keys and left in her vehicle while the other followed in a dark SUV. She was not injured. Her personal cell phone, government cell phone, purse, and government identification were taken with her car. The FBI was able to track the SUV. Delaware State Police found the vehicle outside the Edge Fitness on 2800 Fashion Center Boulevard in Newark, Delaware in the Christiana Mall area. Police found the five teens with the car.

Scanlon represents Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District which includes South Philadelphia, Delaware County, and parts of Chester County. "It was a scary thing to have happen, but I’m extremely grateful no one was hurt," Scanlon said. "I had just finished walking the trails in the park with some of my team members and other officials to discuss the city’s ambitious plans to renovate the park."

Fire broke out in an apartment building near West Chester University early Thursday morning, 12/23. It is privately owned but houses many students. It started around 4:15 a.m. at the University Court Apartments on the 700 block of S. Franklin Street in West Goshen Twp. Firefighters arrived to heavy flames coming from the 2nd floor of the 13-unit building. The fire was brought under control by 5:40 a.m. Three firefighters had minor injuries. No one else was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Upper Darby High School was dismissed early on Thursday afternoon, 12/23, after a small fire was set in a second floor bathroom. A student discovered the fire and alerted two teachers who tried to put it out. A building custodian was able to extinguish the fire. The building was evacuated. Students and staff were allowed back in to the building to retrieve belongings. All after-school activities and evening events were permitted to go on as scheduled. Police are investigating the incident. "Upper Darby Fire Department and Upper Darby Police Department are on campus at the high school. At this time, we are aware that there was a fire on the 2nd floor of the building. School administration was alerted about the fire and immediately evacuated the building. The fire has been extinguished. The fire department has blocked off the 2nd-floor area where the fire occurred to secure the area," the school posted.
