Arrest/Warrant in South Street Shooting; Turnpike Reopens After Crash; Philly Gas Over $5/gallon

Philadelphia Police have one teenager in custody in relation to the mass shooting on South Street on Saturday night, 6/4, in the Queen Village section. District Attorney Larry Krasner announced charges on Monday, 6/6. Quran Garner is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, and violation of uniform firearm acts. There is an arrest warrant for a second unnamed person for attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, conspiracy, violation of the uniforms firearms act, possession of an instrument of crime, tampering of evidence, and obstruction of justice. Investigators are still searching for the other suspect involved in the deadly shootout.

UPDATE: U.S. Marshals have arrested the second suspect, 34-year-old Rashaan Veree.

11 people were injured and 3 were killed when gunfire erupted along the 400 block of South Street around 11:30 p.m. Hundreds of people were out in the popular nightlife and tourist area. Video surveillance shows an altercation between a few men turn into a shootout. Shots were fired into the crowd which could be seen fleeing in all directions. Two guns were recovered at the scene. Police ballistics reports say that four different weapons were fired. Initial reports said that five guns were used. Ballistics evidence from three 9mm guns and one .40 caliber firearm were recovered. One of the reported fatal victims, 34-year-old Gregory Jackson, is also one of the alleged shooters. He got into an altercation with Micah Townes. They exchanged gunfire and Jackson was killed while Townes was seriously injured. These two had a license to carry. Quran Garner opened fire from down the block. When police arrived, an officer shot Garner in the hand. Garner fled the scene, but was taken to the hospital. The cause of the initial fight is still being investigated. The rest of the victims were innocent bystanders.

Eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Chester County reopened around 3:30 p.m. after a multi-vehicle accident late Monday morning, 6/6. It happened around 10:30 a.m. between Route 29 and the Downingtown exit. It involved three tractor-trailers and 2 sedans. 8 people were injured in the crash.

The average gallon of gas has reached new record highs in the region. The Philadelphia area is now above $5/gallon at $5.06. South Jersey is close behind at $4.94. New Castle County in Delaware is the lowest at $4.81. The nationwide average is $4.865 according to AAA. California is averaging $6.341/gallon.
