The School District of Philadelphia has a new superintendent. 51-year-old Dr. Tony B. Watlington Sr. was sworn in during a ceremony on Thursday morning, 6/16. He was most recently the superintendent of the Rowan-Salisbury School System in North Carolina. Watlington Sr. replaces Dr. William Hite who stepped down form the role after 10 years. Watlington has set an intense first 100-day plan including a tour of the city with 80 listening and learning sessions to familiarize himself with the city and the people. His top five priorities include: assessing student and staff well-being, physically and mentally; developing trust with the city; assessing teaching and learning; examining the district's organizational and leadership structure; assessing district finances and operational needs. Philadelphia Police are searching for two suspects after a teenager was shot and killed during a road rage incident in Center City on Wednesday night, 6/15. It happened around 11 p.m. near 15th and Pine streets. 17-year-old Denis Mohamed Jaward of Wayne was driving a rented white Mercedes when there was some sort of incident with another driver. The driver of a Nissan Murano opened fire on the teen striking him multiple times in the body. He was transported to Jefferson Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The SUV left the scene. A few blocks later it hit a Honda and then crashed into some parked cars. The male driver and female passenger fled on foot.

A Philadelphia man has been arrested for selling THC edibles to Montgomery County children using social media. 20-year-old Quashon Rice is charged with felony drug trafficking. Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele says that Rice would use Instagram posts to advertise various products like cereal bars, cookies, brownies, and candy laced with THC (the psychoactive chemical in marijuana). Rice would make these products himself. "He was driving out to neighborhoods throughout Montgomery County, delivering drugs at schools, delivering drugs at parks, and taking it to kid’s residences," Steele said. The products cost between $10-15 and he sold them to children as young as 11.
