The Basketball Alumni Legends League, or The-BALL, tipped off their second showcase game tonight at the Hagan Arena in Philadelphia. The game again pitted Team Philly vs. Team DC, featuring former stars from local colleges and universities. Unlike yesterday's debut matchup, which was controlled by DC the entire game, tonight featured great competition and a close battle throughout. The first showcase game of the new Basketball Alumni Legends League is in the books. Team DC beat Team Philly 111-93 at the Charles E. Smith Center on the Campus of George Washington University. Team DC took control of the game early and never let go, building a sizable lead through 3 quarters. Philly made a push in the late game but it had too far to climb. Phillies starting pitcher Joe Blanton was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers this afternoon and sent West on a trade that will net the Phillies either a player or cash to be decided later.

Blanton is 8-9 with a 4.59 ERA in 21 games so far this year. He has allowed 22 home runs, which is tied for the most in the National League. He leads the league with a 6.4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

All the speculation about trades or free agency can now end, Cole Hamels signed a contract extension with the Phillies for 6 years worth $144 million. That will keep the left hander with the club through 2018, with a club option for 2019.

New York Met's starting pitcher R.A. Dickey has had a career year so far in 2012 and leads the NL roster of pitchers in wins at 12 with a solid 2.40 ERA and 123 strike outs. However, National League manager Tony La Russa and staff decided to start San Francisco Giant Matt Cain instead (7-1, 2.87, 70 SO) to reward him for a "career of excellence". The United States Olympic Basketball Team was announced on Saturday night by USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo. The 12-man roster was selected after Olympic Team training sessions held in Las Vegas. Three final spots opened up after injuries in recent months to at least four top American players. Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all have had injuries that forced them to withdraw from consideration.

Ruban Amaro Jr. announced after the Phillies loss to the Met's Thursday night that Ryan Howard is likely to join the team and start at first base Friday night against the Atlanta Braves at Citizen's Bank Park. Howard has been on the disabled list the entire season since suffering a torn Achilles tendon in the final game last post season.
