Schools Ignore Teacher Seniority, Paterno Billboard, Best Places to Live in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia School Reform Commission has voted to ignore seniority when rehiring teachers this year. Teachers are angry but William R. Hite says the plan gives the school district flexibility in hiring teachers for where they are most needed. Mayor Nutter wants to borrow $50 million to fund the schools, but City Council is not buying into the his plan.

A man convicted of third-degree murder in a suburban Philadelphia crash that killed a 9-year-old girl and paralyzed her grandmother has been sentenced to eight to 25 years in state prison. The FBI raided the Philadelphia Sheriff's offices this morning. Agents arrived at the offices at 100 S. Broad around 9:00 am and served a subpoena and executive search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation begun in previous administrations. Agents were seen leaving the building with files and boxed of paperwork. No one was arrested and the Sheriff's department was fully cooperative. By the time of the third day at Firefly Music Festival in Dover, Delaware many of the attendees and campers were accustomed to the flow of the event. Sunday morning brought mild sunshine and decent temperatures, a rather drastic change from previous two heated days. Nutter Not Appealing Firefighter Fund Order, Laid Off Teacher Seniority, Philly Rising Program

The Nutter Administration has decided not to fight last week's order from a city judge for increased payments to the firefighter's union health care fund. Because the Mayor is still appealing the firefighter's 2009 arbitration award, the union last week told a judge that their health care fund was nearly bone dry. The judge ordered the city to immediately provide a lump sum, $6.7 million payment, and to increase its monthly contribution per firefighter. Nutter said he feels it's more... Read More
