Hurricane Irene's final statistics are still being calculated, but so far over 20 deaths resulted from the Atlantic storm. Over 1 million people lost power and many are still under floodwaters. Up to eight inches of rain were recorded in the Philadelphia area. The Schuylkill, crested today at 13.56 feet. The tidal portion of the Delaware at Philadelphia saw its high water mark reach nearly 10 feet above normal. Irene's winds were not up to those predicted but strong gusts were reported... The storm was not as windy or rainy as predicted, so damages were not as bad as feared. As Hurricane Irene begins to make it's way into the Philadelphia and South Jersey region, it is slightly weakened but still packs a powerful punch. Mayor Michael Nutter has declared a State of Emergency in the City of Philadelphia and cautions all those in flood prone areas to seek alternate shelter as soon as possible. Philadelphia AM radio station WHAT 1340 went off the air this morning and remained off the air all day. No station identification, nothing. Just hours of silence. The eerie void signaled the station is not returning to its Standards music format of 4 years and is preparing to go in a different direction.

The Phillies announced that today's 1:05 p.m. game has been rescheduled as part of a day/night doubleheader on Thursday, September 15 starting at 2:35 p.m.

The entire Philadelphia area, Delaware, and South Jersey is under Hurricane or Tropical Storm Warnings. Hurricane Irene is on course to reach our area Saturday night into Sunday with the eye going right up along the coast. The warnings mean that all areas will experience powerful winds up to hurricane forces 74+, heavy rains 4-10 inches, widespread flooding, and tidal flooding and storm surge near the coastal areas. Phillies Game Saturday Night Postponed; Day Game Still On

Sunday's Phillies game had been moved to Saturday afternoon due to the threat of Hurricane Irene. It was to be played as Game 1 of a Day-Night double header. Now it will be the only game tomorrow.

Saturday's orginally scheduled night game has been postponed to Sept 15th, time yet to be determined, because of the increasing threat of weather tomorrow night.

Hurricane Irene Septa Service Suspended August 28 12am - 12pm

Based on the track of Hurricane Irene and anticipated sustained high winds, heavy rains, and the potential for severe flooding, downed trees, and wires SEPTA service will be suspended between 12:30 a.m. and 12 Noon, Sunday August 28. We will monitor the situation through the overnight and determine our ability to run service after 12 Noon.

Hurricane Irene is boosting business at places like Home Depot, Lowes, Tru Value and Ace hardware stores.

People are standing in lines purchasing bottled water, batteries, flashlights, as well as big ticket items like generators.

Many stores have already sold out of these essentials, which is driving the stress level even higher on many consumers.

Ackerman Speaking Out (of turn)?

Arlene Ackerman is speaking out in interviews this week with Education Week, Fox 29 and WURD-AM.

On WURD-AM, she said Mayor Nutter forced the SRC to get rid of her after she wouldn't "play politics" on funding for full-day kindergarten.

She also told Education Week that the SRC put her on its hit list when she refused to support an unnamed politician who wanted her to back a bid by Foundations Inc. to run Martin Luther King High School as a charter.
