The Philly Pops board of directors filed a motion in Bankruptcy court yesterday effectively saying it's goodbyes to Peter Nero. Nero has been the music director for the Pops for 33 years. The problem lies in Nero's contract, which the organization says is "simply too economically burdensome." The new leadership believes that it cannot continue to compensate Nero at his current contract levels and also continue move forward recovering financially. They seek an expedited ruling from the court by June 30, so they can fill the conductor spot for future performances, including the notable July 3rd concert at Independence Hall. On the other side, Nero believes he should and will remain the leader of the band. He thinks it's the board that needs to go, the survival of the Pops can only be in his hands. The public only knows the Pops as Peter, Peter as the Pops, it can survive without him at the helm. If Peter Nero was no longer the head of the Philly Pops what would happen? Well, we might just find out June 30.
An Abington woman is suing the Phillie Phanatic for injuries she sustained after the big, green guy picked her and her lounge chair up and threw them both in a pool at The Golden Inn in Avalon on July 17, 2010. Suzanne Peirce was attending her sister's wedding, and this unplanned trip into the pool (the shallow end with water) apparently has caused "severe and permanent injuries to her head, neck, back, body, arms and legs, bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and tissues …" as well as many medical bills and medication, plus suffering "humiliation and loss of life's pleasures. “ She filed has suit against everyone including the Phillies, the Hotel, and the Phanatic's best friends Tom Burgoyne and Matt Mehler (or any of his other friends who might have been there). The Phanatic has been sued before for hugging too hard, and for setting off an older fan's arthritis at a Reading Phillies game after hitting her knee.
Jurors in the Clergy Abuse case broke today without a verdict after 7 days of deliberation. Today's day in court wasn't exactly a quiet one, waiting for the the jury room to signal a decision. Instead this jury continued it unorthodox rounds of questions, evidence requests, and legal clarifications. Today they requested the confidential 2008 canonical trial testimony of Rev. Brennan accuser, parts of which were read at trial, but the whole transcript was submitted as evidence. Brennan's lawyer argued heavily against it, saying that it would be like having a new testimony without chance of cross-examination. Judge Sarmina disagreed, and would allow the jury to hear the entire transcript. They listened to an hour of that testimony, most of which was like new evidence, before breaking this afternoon. They'll be back in session Thursday.
