Sean Penn Haiti Benefit Concert

Sean Penn is one of the only celebrities that kept raising money for Haiti once everyone else ceased. As much of the money raised after the Earthquake never reached Haiti, they are still in a great deal of need. Sean Penn makes regular trips down there to do hands-on relief and has been active with many mission teams. He just finished putting together a charity Gala at the Cannes Film Festival in France which raised millions of dollars in proceeds.

His most recent idea was to have a benefit concert in Port Au Prince. It has been a little over 2 years since the disaster, he felt it was a good time to remind America that the Haitians are not out of peril. It has been reported that he has signed acts like Bono and Paul McCartney for the gig but is still looking for high-profile artists. Penn is in serious discussions with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rhianna, Eminem, 50 Cent, and a few others.

He wants this concert to be huge with the sponsors he is working on getting. It is unknown as of now if audience members will watch the concert as a televised event and call in donations or attend in person. As Port Au Prince is one of the most dangerous cities in the world I am guessing he would not want to subject audience members to that. The concert will be held at the National Palace, which reportedly will be torn down in the coming year.

His strong advocacy for Haiti has led him to become an official ambassador of Haiti in January and earlier this year he chastised Hollywood for "allegedly ignorning the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Haiti". I think Haiti would be much better off if we had dedicated self-less actors like Sean Penn who not only give their money but themselves to the cause as well.
