The summer of love, draft cards, sexual repression and illicit drugs. All comes to mind while thinking of the young American youth of the 1960's. A time of liberating freedom, to break away from the social norms. This summer return to the Age Of Aquarius by seeing, 'Hair' outstandingly presented by The Media Theatre on State Street in Media, Pennsylvania. Directed by Artistic Director Jesse Cline, the play is presented alive as ever showcasing the ingenious young talent of up and coming performers.
During Act One we are introduced to a tribe of young counter-culture Americans in New York City bracing the Vietnam War draft while embracing the free peace and love lifestyle iconic of the radical sixties. Tribe leader Claude, played by Gianni Palmarini, is notified of his draft and faces the decision of rebelling or joining the force in Vietnam. Best friend of Claude known as Berger, played by Chris Infantino, is a free-spirit capable of entertaining the tribe with his charisma and confident charm. The stage is continually animated by the lively tribe singing along in unison, creating a unique guild of impressive vocal capability. Claude reminds the tribe he is an Aquarius, destined for greatness.
The chemistry between the performers in the tribe is shown in fantastic harmony, with playful scenes of romance and flirting. Communal consumption of mind-altering substances provide for powerful social commentary and intelligent satire. Derived and set during the flower-power children of the 1960's, the very beginning of the technological age, we become acquainted with a revolutionizing group of our yester-year youths of an important generation. The philosophy and beauty in 'Hair' is as brilliant and significant than ever and delivered with such deity and reverence, the Media Theatre team relishes and thrives in excellence and astonishment.
Musically the play is superior, providing a full rock band with guitar, bass and drums. Notable show tunes in 'Hair' are "Age Of Aquarius", "Let The Sun Shine In" and "Good Morning Starshine." Historically the musical has been a huge influence on successful productions such as "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ: Superstar." We are invited to become one and participate with the bohemian and otherwise universally accepting artistic culture, and throughout the play we become aware just how strong an individual can be. Whether it's protesting the needless war, expressing love for others or providing generosity for the common good, we too can be inspired for greatness. For this reason, 'Hair' proves to be as brave and bold as ever today.
Shining and radiating with talent, The Media Theatre's production of "HAIR: Classic Tribal Rock Musical" is a definite must see. With its last run happening this weekend, you can catch one of the most riveting productions brought to suburban Philadelphia. Recipient of not one but six Broadway World Theatre Awards, including the honor of Best Theatre Company in Philadelphia, The Media Theatre presents prestigious productions of utmost elegance. A delightful display of reverence and accolade by the Media Theatre has been proven to be continuing with each upcoming play, performance and production. Upcoming Broadway Series at The Media Theatre includes Monty Python's "Spamalot", "Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "The Diary Of Anne Frank", "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" and "Sunset Boulevard." Catch the magnificent production and become involved in the revolution and see 'HAIR' this weekend running through Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Purchase tickets here.
