The 91st annual Academy Awards were presented on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, CA. There were a few Philadelphia-area actors, writers, and film makers who were up for Oscars. Jenkintown's Bradley Cooper (Germantown Academy) was nominated in many categories for the movie "A Star is Born" with Lady Gaga including Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Picture. The duet song "Shallow" won for Music (Original Song). Cooper and Delaware native Will Fetters (Salesianum High School and the University of Delaware) were nominated for Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for "A Star is Born." Malvern native and Temple University graduate Adam McKay was nominated for both Directing and Writing (Original Screenplay) for Vice. Marshall Curry (Swarthmore College) was nominated for Documentary (Short Subject) for "A Night at the Garden."

University of Pennsylvania sophomore Claire Sliney won for her work on Best Documentary Short for "Period. End of Sentence." In high school, she helped start a non-profit that sent a sanitary pad-making machine to a village in India. Many girls would drop out of school when they became of age due to the stigma and lack of hygienic materials. If you heard the acceptance speech, they used the term "menstruation equality" which is not only a third world problem, but also happens with poor children in the United States. The documentary is available on Netflix.

Queen opened the hostless show for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions." Watch the video below:
