Record Store Day At Vinyl Revival, Saturday April 19th

Record Store Day at Vinyl Revival was a day-long celebration of all things music. I was there for about 4 fun-filled hours. I was lucky enough to be able to buy most of the records I wanted. I bought 7-inch recordings by Ray LaMontagne "Supernova" and Ronnie Spector And The 'E' Street Band "Say Goodbye To Hollywood"/"Baby Please Don't Go." I also acquired Little Games by the Yardbirds. The cover of the Yardbirds album is a true tribute to 60's art work, sort of wild and cartoonish! I have not got to listen to any of these new additions to my vinyl collection, a collection that now numbers around 6000 or so albums and many 45's.

I was there from 1 to about 5pm or so and talked with a bunch of fellow music fans about bands we have seen and love as well as albums we own or want to own. Saw some familiar faces I see at many of the events Vinyl Revival hosts on Friday and Saturday nights, many new faces looking at both the regular stuff and the Record Store Day specials.

I met James Rosin the author of numerous books. His book â€œPhilly Pop, Rock, Rhythm & Bluesâ€ was being highlighted. He has a vast treasure trove of knowledge about the rock scene in general and the Philly scene in particular. Stood around with a couple of other guys and talked with James for a good hour about our passion, music. All of us were thrilled that Hall & Oates finally got into the Hall of Fame. I bought the book and it is a coast to coast history of everything that is Philly music. A great resource and coffee table book. There were 4 or 5 performance while I was there, but I only got to experience 2 of the bands. Family Vacation was 1st up on my list and they had a little bit of Nada Surf and Pixies in their DNA. The band has 5 members, 4 were performing on Record Store Day. They listen to Dr. Dog, Vampire Weekend, Beach Boys, Pixies and Modest Mouse. They have a Facebook page and you can purchase their songs on Bandcamp. On lead vocals and guitar is Luke Harsel, on Bass and vocals is Alex Hines, on guitar and vocals is Matthew Kerr and on Drums is Adam Shumski. They are definitely an Indie band with power and punch. The did a set of six songs including â€œVacation,â€ â€What's All Aroundâ€œ and my favorite â€œLazy/Conversations.â€ Their songs speak to the everyday things in life that in retrospect are much more important than we realize.

The One 2's are a powerful and funky band with Leiana and Big Crowd Popular fronting this post punk, goth rock group. They performed 5 songs and you can hear the influence of Sonic Youth and the Pixies on this relatively newly formed band. They were very tight with strong vocals. They have a self titled CD out. You can hear or follow them via Bandcamp, RevebNation. Facebook or www.theone2's.com. If you enjoy powerful music and a band with range, these folks are worth a visit to one of their music outlets. The set began with â€œWide Awake.â€ If you weren't wide awake this song will jolt you. A high energy tune that is self descriptive, POW! They also can turn it down a bit and play a catchy tune. â€œRunning Out Of Time' is radio friendly and more main steam. It lays out the thing we all know but ignore, how time just slips by.

This is only my 3rd Record Store Day and my 1st at Vinyl Revival. This year was by far the most festive. The bands make it a different experience, more interesting and I think live music brings out a younger crowd. Can't wait until the next Record Store day on Black Friday, see you at Vinyl Revival.
