| Firefly Music Festival Review Day 3 Saturday; Outkast, Beck, Cage the Elephant, Third Eye Blind |

Saturday, Day 3, at Firefly Music Festival in Dover, DE, started off with a bit of rain in the morning hours but whatever drizzle was left ended as the gates opened. The rest of the day continued to be overcast and it was much cooler than Friday, but only a sun worshipper would complain about the comfortable conditions. Getting a little water on the grounds also helped keep the dust at bay for most of the day.

Local Delaware natives, New Sweden, started off the music on the Big Break stage. These guys from Wilmington, DE, are one of the best live acts in the area and its great to see them take the stage at this mega festival in their backyard featuring some of the biggest names in music. Over on the Backyard stage, Bad Things from Los Angeles kicked off the day's sets there. These guys are also known as “Shaun White's Band†as the Olympic gold medal snowboarder plays rhythm guitar. Having a bandmate that is super famous for something other than being in your band is great for publicity but can take a lot of focus off of everyone else in the band. To the credit of Bad Things, they are a good rock band, but if White wasn't in it who knows if anyone would know about them. White takes a back seat on stage, just playing along almost like he was asked up on stage as a guest. The rest of band looks more cohesive and like they belong together.
Twenty One Pilots were the first to grace the Main Stage on Saturday and the fans were already packed in front waiting for them to come out. Wearing their signature balaclavas, the duo from Columbus, OH, brought the energy right out the gate. The young early crowd sang every word as lead singer Tyler Joseph was back and forth all over the stage and up and over the piano. Second up at the Main Stage were veteran rockers Third Eye Blind. These guys have been at it since the hey day of '90's modern rock and join others here such as Weezer and Foo Fighters stretching the generations of fans. They played a bunch of hits including, “Jumper,†“Semi-Charmed Life,†“Never Let You Go,†and “Losing A Whole Year.†Lead singer Stephan Jenkins thanked the crowd and talked about how special it was to be playing here since they are currently not on tour.
Kaiser Chiefs played a great set on the Lawn stage later in the afternoon. These guys made their name playing festivals in the UK and Europe with their stage presence and high energy and are always reliable to bring it. They finished up the set with “Ruby†and “I Predict A Riot.†If you are looking for energy, then Cage the Elephant from Nashville, TN have plenty to spare. Lead singer Matt Shultz makes his way back and forth across the stage with head and hair flying about. They played “Ain't No Rest for the Wicked,†“In One Ear,†“Shake Me Down,†and “Come a Little Closer.†One act that defies the traditional guitar, bass, drums setup and one that you have to see to know it all comes together is tune-yards. Merrill Garbus builds each song from the ground up using drum loops and vocals, adding in powerful live percussion and bass. The resulting performance is truly unique.
Imagine Dragons have had huge year, moving up the radio and sales charts, performing on the Grammy's with Kendrick Lamar, and touring the world. Lead singer Dan Reynolds got emotional on the Main Stage as he recounted that only two years ago the band had played here at Firefly early in the day on a small stage and now they are back on the Main Stage. They played the hits “It's Time,†“Demons,†and “Radioactive†with help from Cage the Elephant. Back over on the Lawn stage, Beck and company tore through a set of hit after hit in front of a very large crowd. The backdrop behind the band was a giant LED wall that put on an impressive show of graphics, sometimes silhouetting everyone on stage. Beck himself is always the showman, digging deeper into his catalog tonight for songs like “Loser,†“Devil's Haircut,†“Where It's At,†“Girl,†and “E-Pro.â€
Tonight's headliners announced their comeback early this year and that they'd be playing 40 or so dates, however they'd only be appearing at festivals. The time has now come for the Outkast festival tour to roll into Firefly Music Festival. Governor's Ball in NYC in early June was the only other chance you would have had to catch this duo from Atlanta anywhere remotely close to the Northeast so the anticipation was high. To start the set there was a large mysterious cube draped with a curtain set in the middle of stage and illuminated in red light. When the curtain was pulled away, Andre 3000 stood motionless and Big Boi lounged on a bench next to him inside the cube (which was encased with a translucent screen) as the band kicked in on either side. After a few moments they emerged and launched right into the banger “B.O.B.†These guys seem to be in full tour swing and mixed up songs from through out their catalog including “Rosa Parks,†“Ms. Jackson,†“The Way You Move,†“So Fresh, So Clean,†and “The Whole World.â€
One more day. Lot more music to come.
