Cherished North Philadelphia DIY Venue "Maggot House" Kick Starts Spring Series

Last Friday March 22nd, North Philadelphia's esteemed underground circuit venue Maggot House kick started its "Spring Revue" series. On behalf of the recipients moving out in June the collective decided to host three events, each with two different bands, in light of encapsulating the venue's reputation as a staple in showcasing local acts and artists. The first show in the Spring Revue series was Traffic Nightmare supporting Philadelphia's own garage rockers Cold Fronts.

Upon entering and paying the modest event fare of $3, my wrist was stamped and for me the show officially started. Set up at the corner in the midst of couches of the living room was a table featuring merchandise from the bands playing, as well as flyers for previous and upcoming Maggot House events. As the night continued the crowd became more prevalent establishing a buzz alive within the atmosphere of the house. At approximately 8:30PM Traffic Nightmare started their set, erupting into a sonically powerful frenzy. Front man Kevin Stairiker was dressed rather dapper in suit-and-tie, addressing his thoughtful and heartfelt lyrics to the admiring audience. Math-rock in style, sound and formation, Traffic Nightmare deliver songs written with sincerity sought after by many. Traffic Nightmare performed their riveting song, "Kurt Cobain Action Figure" with diction and prowess. Possessing high standard song writing and melodic overtones, Traffic Nightmare continues to impress and surely is developing toward a defined musical direction.

In between sets there were free Philadelphia soft pretzels provided by the house, further solidifying that this was the show to see. For there was good reason to celebrate, the show marked Cold Fronts big return from their Spring Tour. Venturing a good majority of the East Coast, Cold Fronts made it to Austin, TX for this year's South by Southwest Festival alongside a countless number of musicians and popular acts. The band was welcomed back to Philadelphia accordingly with a basement stacked of people dancing and singing along to each song. Guitarist and Lead Vocalist Craig Almquist exclaimed, "We're back, in the 5th largest city in America!" With loud and raw renditions of tunes such as "Heart Attack" and "Strange Architecture" the band proved to be on their top notch game for their Philly homecoming show. Loud guitars, over-the-top solos, and a dance-inducing rhythm section Cold Fronts unifies melody and velocity into a supreme standard of the American rock band. Drummer Alex Smith played with ferocity, driving every beat while keeping the crowd dazzled. Lead guitarist Chris Baglivo (of Dangerous Ponies/Skateboards fame) lunged the band forward with his larger-than-life guitar solos and virtuoso instrument mastering. Musically, Cold Fronts delivers with superiority and class. Currently the band is anticipating the release of their newly recorded album, from which the single "Know It All" originates. Having previously toured with mewithoutYou, the band has since made plenty of progress in perfecting their ability to perform. Down-To-Earth and down to rock, Cold Fronts make their way to the top of the Philadelphia music scene exemplifying just how tall garage rock still stands today.

Preceeding Cold Fronts' ecstatic set was a surprise performance by Chicago's Alt-rockers Grandkids. Lead singer Vivian McConnell's shrilling vocals were powerful enough for an intense and righteous cover of Heart's "Barracuda." After Grandkids finished their set, the remaining crowd kept social and lively. The Maggot House in North Philadelphia has hosted many successful shows, continuing to be a testament to the state of the city's music community. With only two final shows left at the Maggot House for its "Spring Revue" series, there is plenty reason to commemorate with good music. The next event in the series is on April 20th, 2013 with Philly's own Cousin Brian and Avery Rosewater. A successful and strong start with the first of three shows, the Maggot House celebrates the coming of Spring and the passing of an achieved venue. Photos courtesy of the talented Ian Watson.
