Surcharge Now in Effect on all Taxis in City

Philadelphia Parking Authority approved a $1 temporary surcharge for all taxi rides starting earlier this morning at 12 am. The Unified Taxi Workers Alliance of PA had requested the surcharge to help offset the rising costs of gas. This surcharge will remain in effect for at least 90 days, and will be removed once fuel prices drop below $3.75 for 10 days straight afterward.

Cab driver's have been hit hard by the high prices of gas and spend an average of $20 per shift on gas alone while making less that the $7.25/hr minimum wage. Driver's opinions on the surcharge are mixed, some worry that riders may be less likely to hail a cab because of it, especially during these typically slow warmer months when they are even more likely to walk.

Those who need a taxi will probably still be riding though, and hopefully the surcharge helps and doesn't become permanent. For everyone's sake riders, cabbies, and other drivers, let's wish for lower gas prices sooner.
