Concert Review: Cyndi Lauper and Cher at the Wells Fargo Center 4/28

The concert at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday the 28th of April was a "Tale Of Two Cities." An upbeat, fun, and very entertaining concert delivered by Cindy Lauper and a first class Las Vegas extravaganza by Cher. The two performances could not have been more different, yet showcased the true greatness of both of these rock icons.

Right at 7:30, Cyndi took the stage to a near capacity house. The audience gave her a big Philly welcome with cheers and applause that were heart-felt and I believe deserved. I had the pleasure of seeing Cyndi earlier this year at the Keswick and I must say her interactive, in your face, immerse yourself in the crowd performance is better suited to a smaller venue. That said, she did not disappoint and as always that voice, that energy, that personal connection had the audience in the palm of her hand and heart.

Her set consisted of 11 songs much like the set at the Keswick. She started with “She Bop” a crowd pleaser. “ All Through The Night” was the center piece of this night's performance. Her amazing voice and emotional projection had us in awe of this gritty New York Doll. “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” were the audience participation winners of this night. The entire place stood, sang, and had very happy feet. She finished with my favorite “True Colors.” A love song for the ages performed sitting on a stool with a dulcimer, just her and that voice, that legendary voice. At the end of the show she waved, walked around the stage, picked up all the clothing she took off and departed.

Now comes a show to remember in terms of the production value, scale, and sophistication of the show and the stage presence of the star. Cher is an entertainer not just a singer. The sets, lights, computer graphics, costumes, dancers and of course the performance were awesome. Cher was in control of her fans and the environment. Her voice pristine on every level. With the built up anticipation of the audience, Cher launched the performance with “Woman's World.” It was evident how emotional she is about Sonny, even to this day. She did two songs using tape to sing with Sonny. I am admittedly a sentimental smock. Both “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On” got to me and the entire audience, one of the few times during the show folks did not stand. If you came for costumes you got them, especially in conjunction with “Half-Breed.” Her signature full head-dress and skimpy lion cloth were a tribute to her showmanship and great physical shape. The place rocked to “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Believe” which picked up the pace and mood.

Now the finale, Cher on a gondola moving around the venue almost close enough to touch her. She was dressed like a saint with a halo, all in gold. She belted out “I Hope You Find It.” A fitting ending to a real experience, a concert of juxtaposed but very congruent performances by two of the leading ladies of classic rock.
