On Friday Aug. 22nd, The Vault at Vinyl Revival Record Store hosted a concert by Betty Soo and Bob Beach. Bob is a local institution in the music world. He accompanied Betty with his signature virtuoso harmonica. Betty is hard to put into a musical box. She is bluesy, country, indie and most of all very talented. She is a Texas resident, a New York transplant. She has recorded 6 full length albums of original music.

She is a relaxed performer who interacts with her audience with an ease and comfort, like an old shoe. She is a true troubadour. She travels the country performing and visiting her friends. She was going from Lansdowne to Austin to Anchorage all in the course of a little over two days.

There is a lot of power in this diminutive performer, a big voice with texture and range. She has the soul of Bonnie Raitt and the sweet sound of Joan Baez. She opened with “Lie To Me.” Very soulful and bluesy in its feel with a story about self-deceit and heartache. Her songs push you to think about how quickly life passes with “Wheels” and how painful being a teen can be with “Never The Pretty Girl.”

Her rapport with Bob Beach spilled over into an intense connection with the audience. She has some very loyal fans, including one who drove 3 hrs. from Northern Jersey to catch this intimate performance. Like most troubadours, her guitar has been her companion not just an instrument. She played it with a sensitivity and passion one shares with a best friend. She is quite a picker!

Bob Beach did a Tom Waits take on the old tune, “Way Down In The Hole” accompanied by Betty on guitar and soulful harmony. “Hysterical” and “Secrets” were two of my favorites from Betty Soo. Both songs allowed Betty to use her voice to the max. As the titles would suggest they are tales of despair and deceit that we have all experienced. She has a way of connecting with the base human emotions, the raw and at times painful part of life.

This concert was part of a one year anniversary for Vinyl Revival. All of you Vinyl Heads need to come out and support your local record shop. Shops like Vinyl Revival provide a great place to browse for some additions to your record collection as well as buy new releases from your favorite artists. What Vinyl Revival has that is unique is a performance venue for music and film. All year-long on Friday nights you can come out to hear some fine young talent, meet some nice folks and talk about music. Acts like Betty Soo and Bob Beach find their way to this jewel located on Lansdowne Ave in downtown Lansdowne. You can buy her stuff or follow Betty Soo on www.BettySoo.com and see what is up at Vinyl Revival at www.vinylrevivalrecords.com. You can also buy albums from them on eBay.
