Had the opportunity to go to the Dr. Dog concert on Saturday Sept. 13th and I have to say I was impressed. With the release of Dr. Dog's album, B-Room, I've become a recent member of the dog pound. I arrived late roamed around eating and missed all of the warmup acts (Mac DeMarco, The Front Bottoms, Hop Along). Talked to more than a few folks at the concert and it appears it was my loss for the feedback was all positive.
With the band hailing from West Grove, PA the concert felt a bit like a home coming. There were some 5000 very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and loyal fans in attendance. In 2002, Dr. Dog released their debut Toothbrush, so they have been around. The vast majority of the crowd this night were 20 somethings who knew ever word to every song. Thank God the rain passed and the sky cleared for the Skyline Stage is an outdoor setting. The weather and the mood of the crowd was joyous and it was indeed a fine night for what turned out to be a stellar concert.
Even though I got there late, I had a fine vantage point no more than 40 to 50 feet from the stage and to the left. The energy was flowing both ways and Dr. Dog launched into “My Old Ways.†The response was immediate. The dancing, singing and clapping started and continued the entire concert!! The way I look at a concert is, did the fans have a good time, did they get into it and did the band reciprocate? Yes. I saw, felt and got into what turned into 24 or so songs of high energy live music.
They performed a wide array of songs form their 7 releases. Some rarely played songs like “We All Belong†and the bluegrass inspired “Phenomenon†pumped the crowd. Sarah Larson from the Philly based Ladybird added some spirited fiddle. If you can, catch Ladybird, their music and vocals will get your motor going.
Being a recent convert, I wanted to hear B-Room. I was not disappointed. They did 5 or 6 from B-Room with “Nelly,†“Distant Light†and “Too Weak To Ramble†being my favorites. All three songs have a up tempo Dylanesque feel and sound, so very good!
Dr. Dog left the stage for the obligatory encore. This was anything but your everyday encore. Seven more great songs along with a deluge of Dr. Dog Lawn of Mann inflatables that were tossed hither and through. “Wake Up†was the closer as well as the hands down favorite of the sing-along contingent. Doo-we-oo-wee-a baba, silly but so cool to sing and it just fits.
It would be very hard for me to find something about the concert, I did not really enjoy. The vocal work, lead and harmony, by Toby, Scott and Frank were at once both tight and raw. The keys and synthesizer by Zach and Dimitri with Eric on drums rounds out a superlative line up. Even the food vendors were very good, a surprise!!! When I first discovered that it was a general admission show, I wasn't sure about it. The sense of connection and fun would have been diminished in seats, so let them stand!
