Phillies Offer Arbitration to Rollins, Madson and Ibanez

The Phillies have offered salary-arbitration deals to Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Madson and Raul Ibanez. If they accept, the Phillies will negotiate lower salary deals for the players to stay here. If they refuse, they can offer themselves to other teams for bigger salaries and the Phillies would get some extra picks in the draft. The Phillies did not arbitration deals to pitchers Brad Lidge and Roy Oswalt. They will be wearing other uniforms next season. Players have until Nov. 30 to accept arbitration offers.

According to CSN Philly:
In all probability, the Phillies have determined that Ibanez will either reject the arbitration offer and sign elsewhere or negotiate a more favorable deal with the team if he returns in a lesser role.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said last week that the Phillies have discussed the notion of bringing back Ibanez in a reduced role while John Mayberry Jr. gets the opportunity to be the starting leftfielder.

Even if a player accepts arbitration, the team and player can continue to negotiate a contract before getting to the hearing stage.

Should Ibanez, 39, sign elsewhere, the Phillies will receive a compensatory pick between the first and second round.

The compensation for Rollins and Madson could be even greater. In Rollins' case, the Phillies would receive the first-round pick of the team that signs him, provided that team was among the top 15 in baseball last season.

Although the Phillies are still trying to re-sign Rollins, it would seem likely that they will at least get a first-round pick for him. The shortstop is on record as saying he wants to play for a team that has a chance to win a World Series.

Should Rollins sign with a team that finished in the bottom half of the standings, the Phillies would get a second-round pick and a compensatory pick between the first and second rounds.

Similar compensation rules apply to Madson, who is expected to sign elsewhere. Instead of getting the first- or second-round pick of the team that signs Madson, the Phils would get a pick one spot ahead of that team, as well as a compensatory pick between the first two rounds.
