The Little League World Series 2020 Has Been Canceled

The Little League World Series has been canceled for the first time in almost 75 years due to coronavirus COVID-19. The annual youth baseball tournament is held in August in Williamsport, PA. It brings teams from all over the United States and the World to compete for the LLWS championship. Organizers acknowledge the fact that many teams in the US and the World are not able to play their regular seasons nor would they been able to travel to and participate in regional qualifying tournaments. Significant testing and mitigation protocols would also need to be in place to hold an event with so many people. LLWS players are 10-12 years old.

"This is a heartbreaking decision for everyone at Little League International, but more so for those millions of Little Leaguers who have dreamt of one day playing in one of our seven World Series events," said Little League President Stephen Keener. "After exhausting all possible options, we came to the conclusion that because of the significant public health uncertainty that will still exist several months from now, and with direction from Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine, as well as senior public health officials and government leaders from locations where our other six World Series are held, as well as their qualifying regional tournaments, it will not be possible to proceed with our tournaments as weâ€™ve hosted them for nearly 75 years."
