19-year-old Gilbert Newton of Philadelphia was convicted of first-degree murder on Wednesday, 9/29, in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend 18-year-old Megan McCaffery of Abington Township. The jury deliberated for 2 1/2 hours before returning the guilty verdict. He faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. It happened around 8 a.m. on July 27, 2020 at the Meadowbrook SEPTA Station on the 1400 block of Old Valley Road. Police discovered her body next to her running car suffering from over 30 stabs wounds. Newton was arrested later that morning after he was found sitting in his home in bloody clothes.

The pair met at the secluded station to talk about their recently ended relationship. Newton took the stand in his own defense during the trial. He said that he brought two kitchen knives to stab "himself" and "to see if she cared about me." He said that they began to argue and he became angry and ended up stabbing her. His defense admitted that he did stab her, but argued that he didn't go there to kill her and should be found guilty of a lesser charge. However, several damning text messages presented by the prosecution painted a different picture. In the weeks before the killing, he wrote to his mother, "I'm really going to kill her, I'm gonna stab her in the neck 57 times." He also wrote to the victim, "I honestly hope u die at this point. Like I just wanna stab u in the neck continuously."

One person was killed and two others were critically injured in a triple shooting in Strawberry Mansion early Wednesday morning, 9/29. It happened around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of N. 33rd Street and W. Diamond St. The three women left the 7 Star Lounge on the 2600 block W. Sergeant Street. They took two separate cars and stopped to talk about a mile away. Investigators believe they were followed from the club. A gunman opened fire on the two cars. 24-year-old Chaundrah Jones of Clifton Heights was shot in the back and wrist. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 26-year-old woman was also shot in the back and wrist. A 32-year-old woman was shot in both her legs and pelvis. They are both in critical condition. No arrests have been made.

One person was killed and 13 others were injured in a single-vehicle crash on I-295 in Mercer County, NJ. It happened around 3:20 p.m. in the northbound lanes near mile marker 59 in Hamilton Township. A white passenger van carrying 14 people overturned on the highway and caught fire. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The other 13 passengers were taken to area hospitals, some with serious injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation. The victims' identities have not been revealed.
