Republican Senator-elect Edward Durr, who defeated longtime state Senate president Steve Sweeney this week, is coming under fire for several past tweets. Durr is a political newcomer who worked as a furniture company truck driver and reportedly spent only $153 on his campaign to oust Sweeney in New Jersey's 3rd district. There are several controversial tweets now under scrutiny. One tweet from 2019 includes xenophobic language against Muslims. He said Muhammed is a "pedophile" and that Islam is a "false religion" and "cult of hate."

Durr reponded on Friday, 11/5, "I'm a passionate guy and I sometimes say things in the heat of the moment. If I said things in the past that hurt anybody's feelings, I sincerely apologize," he said. "I support everybody's right to worship in any manner they choose and to worship the God of their choice. I support all people and I support everybody's rights. That's what I am here to do, work for the people and support their rights."

Two women were shot and killed inside an abandoned church that was operating as a speakeasy on Thursday evening, 11/4. It happened around 7:45 p.m. on the 1900 block of Ridge Avenue near Girard College. 56-year-old Constance Marshall was shot in the side and 31-year-old Irene McNair was stuck multiple times in the torso. "The shooter or shooters were standing on the sidewalk in front of the property and fired at least seven shots into the property. Some went through the door - we believe the door may have been partially open and struck both females that were just inside of the property," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. There were several coolers of alcohol inside the building and it was being powered by a portable generator. If you have any information, call police at 215-686-TIPS.

Sports
The Philadelphia 76ers have resumed fining Ben Simmons. He was docked his $360,000 game salary starting with Thurday night's, 11/4, game at Detroit. Simmons expressed that he was dealing with mental health issues at the start of the season as a reason for not being able to participate in basketball-related activities. He has apparently worked with mental health professionals via the National Basketball Players Association, but has not provided any information about that treatment to the team or team recommended specialists. Simmons' salary will be placed in escrow and any fines will be taken from there. He will also be docked for missing basketball-related obligations like practice and meetings.
