Philadelphia Artists Win Big at Grammy Awards; Jazmine Sullivan, Questlove, Nézet-Séguin

The 64th annual Grammy Awards were held on Sunday night, 4/3, in Las Vegas. Philadelphia artists were well represented and came home winners. Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson, drummer for The Roots, won Best Music Film for Summer of Soul. He took home an Oscar for Best Documentary for the same film last Sunday. It was about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. Jazmine Sullivan won two Grammys. She won Best R&B Album for Heax Tales and tied for Best R&B Performance for "Pick Up Your Feelings". Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra won Best Orchestral Performance for Florence Price's First and Third Symphonies. Christian McBribe Big Band won Best Large Jazz Ensemble for For Jimmy, Wes and Oliver. Sun Ra Arkestra was also nominated in the category.

Japanese Breakfast was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album, but lost both categories. Leslie Odom Jr. and Pink were both nominated in the best song written for visual media category. Kevin Hart was nominated for Best Comedy Album. Marian Anderson was nominated in Best Historical Album for Beyond the Music: Her Complete RCA Victor Recordings. Joni Mitchell's box set Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 1, the Early Years, 1963-1967 won the category. That album contains recordings of Joni's performings on the late Gene Shay's folk show. The Opera Philadelphia Orchestra was nominated for Best Opera Recording. The Crossing was nominated for Best Choral Performance. The Baylor Project was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
