Philadelphia's indoor mask mandate returned on Monday, April 18. The City of Philadelphia has its own 4-tiered response level based on average daily cases, which is different than the CDC or even CHOP. The guidelines call for Level 2: Mask Precautions when case levels are between 100 and 250. Masks are required indoors in all public spaces including businesses, restaurants, entertainment venues, schools, gyms, museums, and government buildings. If an establishment requires vaccinations to enter, then masks are not required. A lawsuit is pending in Commonwealth Court seeking to strike down the new mandate. "Philadelphia actually did away with the CDC guidelines as the standard and they've invented their own guidelines," said Attorney Thomas W. King III. "They're making this stuff up. I want to see the state commonwealth court strike down this mandate as a violation of Pennsylvania law."

The federal mask mandate for public transit was set to expire on Monday, April 18, but the CDC had extended it two weeks to May 3. U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle in Tampa, FL, ruled on Monday, 4/18, that the CDC improperly failed to justify its decision and did not follow proper rulemaking, voiding the mandate. The Transportation Safety Agency (TSA) announced that it will no longer enforce the mask mandate on planes. Amtrak also will not require masks. SEPTA has lifted its mask policy. To confuse matters, Philly's indoor mask mandate requires you to wear a mask inside Philadelphia International Airport, but you do not have to wear it after you board the plane.

A victim shot and killed a suspect impersonating a police officer during a home invasion in Northeast Philadelphia on Easter night. It happened around 10 p.m. Sunday, 4/17, on the 7200 block of Battersby Street in Mayfair. The 25-year-old male victim had just returned home when he was approached by two men at his front door. At least one of the men had a badge around his neck was armed. They forced their way inside the home and zip tied the victim's hands behind his back. "They tied his hands with zip ties around his back and threatened to kill him if he made any sudden moves. That's when our victim realized these individuals were not police officers," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. The victim was able to free his hands enough to reach his own gun. He fired at the suspects and his the man with the badge three times. The other suspect fled. Police arrived to find the suspect shot in the head, chest, and arm. He was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police are searching for the second suspect.
