That’s how local business leaders describe legislation to relieve some of Philadelphia’s business privilege tax (BPT) burden that was expected to be approved by City Council Thursday and signed into law by Mayor Michael Nutter.

Philadelphia School District officials recommended that Stanton Elementary School at 17th and Christian, as well as eight other city schools be closed. In Philadelphia's schools there are thousands of surplus seats, financial problems, and aging buildings. Teachers and students at Stanton are fighting to keep it open claiming academic success and happy students and teachers.

Former Philadelphia Mayor John Street is under investigation by Pennsylvania's State Ethics Commission. They are looking into Street's role in awarding millions of dollars of Philadelphia Housing Authority legal work to his son's former law firm.

John Street was chairman of the PHA board in 2004 and voted at least five times to give PHA contracts to Wolf Block Schorr & Solis-Cohen L.L.P. His son, Sharif, billed PHA more than $700,000 while working as a lawyer assigned to the PHA... Read More

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou backed away from plans for a public vote on a bailout deal for Greece as his government appeared on the verge of toppling. The renewed indication that the effort to stabilize the Euro-zone would succeed boosted stock prices around the globe. Deer-Vehicle Collision Season

Last year in Pennsylvania, eight people died and more than 600 were injured in 3,000 crashes involving deer, according to PennDOT.

Nationwide, about 200 people die and tens of thousands are injured in about 1.6 million deer-vehicle crashes that result in more than $3.6 billion in vehicle damage, according to AAA.

Fall is typically the most dangerous period, as mating season adds to the hazards. Autumn hunting seasons also get deer moving.

Philadelphia School District Closing Nine Schools?

Philadelphia School District officials on Wednesday recommended closing nine schools and making grade changes at 17 others due to declining enrollment, aging facilities, and a brutal fiscal situation.

But the School Reform Commission signaled that perhaps the changes did not go far enough.
If the SRC adopts the recommendations next year, these would be the first large-scale school closings in the district since 1981.

Alycia Lane, Larry Mendte and CBS will do battle in a Philadelphia courtroom. That's the word from thee PA Supreme Court, which has ruled that the trial of Alycia Lane's civil suit against CBS and former co-anchor Larry Mendte will remain in Philadelphia.

Lane wanted the case to be tried here. CBS has been fighting through the appeal process to change the venue to New York. CBS argued that Lane's contract contained a clause saying that cases against the network should be heard... Read More

Philadelphia's 30th Street Station Plaza Opens

At noon Wednesday, Philadelphia's "great new public space" outside 30th Street Station gets its official dedication with a grand-opening ceremony….including music, food, fitness demonstrations and street performers.
