Phillies Chase Utley, out a long time? It's looking that way. Utley can't run, and is only fielding ground balls with the aid of a lawn chair according to Ruben Amaro Jr. Amaro also said they're doing everything they possibly can to avoid Chase getting into a surgery. Can surgery help? Why are they waiting to make a decision? Tendinitis? Arthritis? A bone spur? What's going on with Chase? |

Opening day is only 8 days away and Chase hasn't taken any fielding practice or has even been close to running yet. Ruben Amaro even said today when asked if Utley would start the season on the DL, "I would think so. We haven't seen him on the field yet and we're a week away. It's likely he's not going to be making our club, at least not right now."
Utley has been sitting for about a month now with little improvement. He could be out for the first couple months to start the season, returning late May/early June. However, this is Chase Utley, the miracle healer, so he could surprise us.
As for who to take his place, Castillo? Wilson Valdez? We have a few more games to evaluate Castillo, but I think that Valdez has proved himself worthy of being the guy to step in. Last year he was able to play all the infield positions when our guys went down, great defensive player, and a terrific arm.

The Phillies released Castillo today, opting to go with Wilson Valdez and Rule 5 draftee Michael Martinez. Both players can play almost any position and are each good defensive players. That answers who will be playing second base, with Valdez taking the field for the Opener on Friday.
As for Utley, his rehab still seems to be progressing very slowly and is under tight wraps. Maybe for the only reason because there is nothing to report. Earlier this week he said he hoped to be back before the All-Star break, while team officials put the timeline at a more optimistic mid-May. Only time will tell, but it doesn't seem like it will be anytime in the near future.
Fantasy players can forget drafting Utley, or if you do he won't be playing for at least a month or two. I'd look for another mid-infielder for your roster. |

Last Thursday, April 14th, in Washington, Utley did some running just outside the infield from the right field line to the left field line. He also participated in shuttle drills and fielded ground balls during batting practice. He's said his everything felt good but obviously he is taking his rehab for patellar tendinitis, chondromalacia and bone inflammation in his right knee in stride and not pushing anything too hard yet.
There is no time table for when he will return yet, but everyone is pretty certain that it will be sometime before the All-Star break. Best case scenario would be mid-May.
Obviously, it would be great to get Utley back into the lineup. Though, his replacement(s) Wilson Valdez (Pete Orr) has been doing a good job at second. And despite his lack of RBI's Jimmy Rollins has been hitting well out of the 3 spot. |
