Chase Utley Speaks Out About Knee Problem; No Time Table When He Will Be Back

Chase Utley does not know when he will be back on the field, but he does expect to play this year. There is no set time table in he recovery this year, much the same as last year when he missed the first 46 games.

Last week, Utley left Spring Training camp suddenly and went to see a specialist in Phoenix. The therapist, Brett Fischer, who has also worked with Donovan McNabb, Jim Thome, and dozens of other professional athletes suggested non-surgical treatments such as stretches and manual therapy.

"It's important to get everything around my knees working correctly," Utley said. "And I think it’s going to take a little bit of time. I’m disappointed. I’m upset. I’m not happy that I’m in this situation right now, but I’m not going to let that deter me and get me down."

Chase Utley, 33, is affected by chondromalacia in both knees. Last year, it was just his right knee that was causing pain, this year it is both, although the left seems to be worse this time. Chondromalacia is a roughening of the cartilage underneath the knee cap. The second baseman say it is not chronic, and he does not have patellar tendinitis, but he will take the rehab process "fairly slow."

"It's not bad enough to have microfracture surgery," Utley said. "It's not bad enough to end my career. It's an issue I'm going to have to deal with."

"I've already seen benefits over the last four or five days from doing some new exercises," Utley said. "I'm very optimistic this is going to turn out well. But again it’s going to take a little time and I have to do this right. I think it’s important, not only for this year, but for the rest of my career. I’m 33 years old. I know some people think that’s old, but I still feel like I have a lot of baseball left in me."

Chase won't start the season, and doesn't know when he'll be ready. Right now it seems Freddy Galvis will have to take the 2B spot on the roster.
