Operation Swill Cracks Down NJ Bars; Life Sentence Bucks Killer; Gay Boy Scouts Yes, Gay Leaders No

The New Jersey Attorney General and the Director of the division of Alcoholic Beverage Control have released more details in their yearlong investigation called "Operation Swill." Twenty-nine bars and restaurants including 13 TGI Friday's were accused of substituting cheap booze for top-shelf liquor. Others were found using “river water,” not from a tap, and at least one used food coloring and rubbing alcohol as substitute for whiskey. The investigation happened between January and February of this year. Samples were covertly taken from drinks ordered 'neat'. Any punishments will be leveled against the alcohol license holder, but not any individuals.

Twenty-year-old Jermaine M. Jackson of Trenton was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday. Earlier this week Jackson was convicted of second-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy in the shooting death of Bucks County musician Danny DeGennaro. Jackson recruited four others to help him rob DeGennaro, supposedly of a drug debt. Instead of robbing the guitarist, Jackson's co-conspirators ended up shooting the 56-year-old Levittown resident in his home. Jackson's defense attorney plans to appeal.

Leaders of the Boy Scouts of America voted on a plan today to allow openly gay boys to be accepted into their membership. Gay adults will remain barred from serving as Scout leaders. Over 1,400 voting members of BSA's National Council were attending their annual meeting in Dallas, TX, and cast ballots on the issue. The membership policy will still prove to be a divisive one, with most scout troops being chartered by religious institutions, both conservative and liberal. Sponsors and donors have also threatened to back out if it was or was not changed from it's traditional non-inclusive approach. Only time will tell what this split policy will bring, especially when a young gay scout grows old enough to become a leader.
