Cigarette Caused Deadly South Jersey Motel Fire; Marijuana Bill Introduced in New Jersey

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato says that a cigarette discarded in a stuffed chair set off the blaze last week at the Mariner's Cove Motor Inn in Point Pleasant Beach that killed 4 people and injured 8 others. The four have been identified as 45-year-old John Alberti, of Keansburg; 20-year-old Paulo Martins, of South River; 52-year-old Harold Ford, of Neptune; and 66-year-old Albert Sutton, of Mount Laurel. The medical examiner determined they died of smoke inhalation. The chair was located in a designated-smoking section on the second floor of the motel. More than half of the motel's guests were people displaced from Superstorm Sandy.

One New Jersey lawmaker thinks that its time that marijuana becomes a legal, taxable pastime in the Garden State. State Senator Nicholas Scutari introduced a bill today that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana and regulate and tax its sale. Similar to Colorado's law, adults could purchase amounts up to 1 oz. and have 6 plants. Sales would be taxed at 7% bringing in millions of dollars of revenue to be used mainly for roads and bridges. The goal would be to reduce the amount of crime associated with the drug trade and the financial burden placed on the state in enforcing drug laws. One of the biggest hurdles in passing such a law is Governor Chris Christie's opposition to legalizing recreational marijuana.
