Villanova University announced it's 2014 Commencement Speaker and Honorary degree recipients today. Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States and a Villanova alumna, will deliver the Commencement Address on Friday May 16th. Dr. Biden graduated from Villanova in 1991 with a Masters of Arts in English. She also holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Delaware, another Masters in Reading from West Chester University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Delaware. Biden will receive the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa. Dr. Biden, a native of Willow Grove and longtime educator, is a supporter of military families, the importance of community colleges, and breast cancer research and early detection. Despite being Roman Catholic, Biden holds a pro-abortion stance.

Villanova University also announced that long-time youth theater and performing arts innovator Harry Dietzler will receive the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa. Dietzler is a native of Upper Darby, PA and founded Upper Darby Summer Stage, a summer theater program for young people, in 1976 while still an undergrad at Temple. This summer more than 700 youth will create six children’s theater musicals and a Broadway show in nine weeks. Notable alumni include Tina Fey; Terrence J. Nolen and Amy Murphy, two of the co-founders of Arden Theatre Co.; actress Monica Horan; and TV producer Mark Cronin. Dietzler currently serves as Artistic Executive Director for the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center.

Governor Tom Corbett is changing his position on medical marijuana and will back legislation that would legalize marijuana extract for children suffering from seizure disorders. The governor met today with parents of children affected by the decision. The proposal would have to get legislative approval but would involve a “research-based pilot program” with the leading children's hospitals in Pennsylvania. The program would give the children access to treatment and also enable scientific study of cannabidiol, the marijuana oil extract.
