A Philadelphia police officer is recovering after he was shot several times during an ambush late Thursday night in West Philadelphia. (photo below) The officer - 33-year-old Jesse Hartnett - was sitting in his patrol car around 11:30 p.m. at 60th and Spruce Streets when a gunman fired 13 shots through the driver's side of the car and was struck three times in his left arm. Hartnett returned fire and struck the 30-year-old suspect Edward Archer at least three times. The suspect tried to escape on foot, authorities say, but was quickly caught and taken to the hospital.

UPDATE: 30-year-old Edward Archer of Yeadon confessed to the shooting saying he did it 'in the name of Islam.' Archer told police that he had pledged allegiance to ISIS and the shooting was "an attempted assassination of a police officer." The gun used in the shooting was a police firearm reported stolen in October 2013. FBI says that Archertraveled to Saudi Arabia in 2011 and to Egypt in 2012 but don't know if he has any connections to terror groups.

It's sentencing day for the contractor who oversaw demolition at the site of the deadly 2013 building collapse, at 22nd and Market Streets. A jury convicted him last October on six counts of involuntary manslaughter and other charges. The pre-sentencing memo configured by the Philadelphia District Attorney's office seeks a 25-50-year prison sentence for Griffin Campbell. The only other person facing criminal charges, Campbell’s heavy equipment operator, Sean Benschop, who pleaded guilty to the same charges and testified at trial, will also be sentenced. His plea arrangement with prosecutors stipulates that he serve no more than 20-years in prison.
Campbell was offered but rejected the same plea arrangement.

UPDATE: Griffin Campbell was sentenced Friday to 15-30 years in state prison. Sean Benschop was sentenced to 7 1/2 to 15 years in prison.

Philadelphia Police Officer Lauretha Vaird was the department's first woman to be killed in the line of duty. She was gunned down 20 years ago after being first on the scene of a robbery leaving her two sons without a mother. The city mourned... and honored her memory, re-naming the Feltonville Boys and Girls Club - less than a mile from where she died - after the fallen hero. Tomorrow, the Guardian Civic League and FOP Lodge 5 is holding its annual basketball fundraiser to benefit the Vaird Club and celebrate Vaird’s legacy with her family.
