A Mount Laurel man has been arrested and taken into custody on Monday, 7/5, after he was caught on video harassing, threatening, and screaming racial slurs at a Black neighbor. 45-year-old Edward Cagney Mathews is charged with harassment, bias intimidation, and assault. It happened around 8 p.m. Friday, 7/2, in front of the victim's home. Mathews threatened the man, calling him a 'monkey' and the 'n-word' several times. Police arrived and Mathews went home. Before he left, he gave out his address on Gramercy Way to the person recording the incident on video. On Monday, 7/5, the video started to go viral and protestors appeared outside Matthews' home. A large crowd had grown by the time police took him into custody. Mathews had to be led out through the crowd. There have been other complaints about Mathews in the past.

"The Mount Laurel Police Department does not tolerate hate or bias intimidation in any form. This type of behavior is totally unacceptable," a police spokesperson wrote. "We can assure our residents that incidents like this are thoroughly investigated and that those who commit such offenses will be held accountable for their actions."
