A hospital worker armed with multiple weapons, including an AR-15 rifle, entered Jefferson Hospital and shot a co-worker early Monday morning, 10/4. It happened just after midnight at Jefferson University Hospital at 11th and Chestnut in Center City. The 55-year-old male suspect who works as a certified nursing aide entered the hospital wearing scrubs and body armor. He went to the ninth floor and shot a 43-year-old male certified nursing aide. The victim was pronounced dead a short time later. The suspect fled in a U-Haul truck. "It is pretty clear as it relates to the murder that happened of a 43-year-old, completely innocent victim, in Jefferson Hospital that the two people knew each other and early indications are that they were actually friends. We don't know what the motivation was that caused our suspect to go in and murder the person. But he was clearly, based on everything I know, targeting this individual," said Chesley Lightsey, Assistant District Attorney - Homicide. The victim has been identified as Anrae James (see photo). He was a husband and father of three. The suspect has been identified as Stacey Hayes.

Around 1:25 a.m., Philadelphia Police were flagged down by a passerby in the Parkside neighborhood of West Philadelphia. They found a man in scrubs waving a gun in a wooded area near School of The Future on the 4000 block of Parkside Avenue. The suspect began firing at officers who then returned fire. "The offender struck by the officers was struck in the upper body and in the neck. We learned that he was wearing body armor and was carrying multiple weapons in addition to the long gun which was believed to be an AR-15 and was also carrying some form of a handgun," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. Two officers were also shot. A 30-year-old officer was hit in the right elbow and a 32-year-old officer was struck in the nose. They are both in stable condition. The School of the Future switched to virtual classes on Monday due to the police activity.

A jury was selected on Monday, 10/4, in the federal trial of IBEW 98 leader John 'Johnny Doc' Dougherty and Philadelphia City Councilman Bobby Henon. They are facing an 100 count indictment including charges of bribery, conspiracy, and fraud. Dougherty is the head of the Local 98 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council. Henon worked for Local 98 before running for City Council in 2011. He still receives a $70,000/year salary from the union in addition to his city salary. He is accused of using his position as councilman to influence organizations to use union labor, including Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Comcast Corp. Dougherty is also facing a second trial on embezzlement charges with 6 other defendants. Both men have proclaimed their innocence. "I have had zero crimes," Dougherty said outside the courthouse. "So this is a relief. I can't wait to get in and get this done."

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the suspicious deaths of two people in a home on Long Beach Island. The victims were found on Sunday, 10/3, inside a bay front home on North 7th Avenue in Surf City. They have been identified as 87-year-old John Enders of Surf City and 75-year-old Francoise Pitoy of Manchester. Prosecutors say the deaths are suspicious but also believe that they were targeted. More will be known after autopsies are performed. "This is an active and ongoing investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, Surf City Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit. As we stated earlier, both deaths are suspicious in nature but there is no danger to the public at this time.  Our investigation indicates this was a targeted attack against both decedents," Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer stated. "We will be able to release more information once post-mortem examinations have been completed," Prosecutor Billhimer concluded. The 6 bedroom/4 bathroom home is currently listed for sale for $1.999 million. It is apparently under contract.

UPDATE: 55-year-old Sherry Lee Heffernan of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, is charged with stabbing her father and his girlfriend to death in his Surf City home.
