American Idol Season 11 Finale .. And the Winner Is ... (Video)

The 11th season of television's highest rated show wrapped up tonight. American Idol has been handing us hopefuls for a long time. Some are still doing well, like Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson, while most disappear, and many of the brightest stars don't even win top honors and the guaranteed contract. The one thing that the winner always gets from the music industry and radio is at least that first chance.

Tonight's over 2 hour show featured the season's voted off cast performing many songs. There were also special appearances by Rihanna, Chaka Kahn, Neil Diamond, Reba McEntire, Jennifer Holliday, and John Fogerty. Former Idols Jordin Sparks and Fantasia performed, and Idol judges Steven Tyler (with Aerosmith) and Jennifer Lopez took the stage.

Even a marriage proposal (with jeweler shoutout) got packed into the spectacle. Former contestants Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo got engaged on stage.

A 21-year-old guitar player and pawn shop worker from Leesburg, GA, Phillip Phillips went up against a 16-year-old vocal powerhouse and high school student, Jessica Sanchez from Chula Vista, CA for the grand prize. A record high 132 million votes were cast for tonight's reveal.

The winner? a guy so nice they named him twice, Phillip Phillips won the season. Described as a southern gentleman and mild mannered, he'd do well coming up in the indie rock/folk scene if he didn't actually just land on the mega pop tour. Phillips joins an increasingly long line of other WGWG's (white guys with guitars) to win Idol's top honors. He sang his first 'single' "Home" after accepting congratulatory hugs from everybody.

There are a few other big music talent competition shows out there now, and they all have their own rules of the game. Idol still feels like the one that anyone can get on and anyone has a chance to win. Some kids who are watching seasons now might not have been born when it started. It might not have the biggest prize, or the overall best talent, but it still has the biggest audience and that will keep it going.
