First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to visit Philadelphia next week for a campaign event. Her office said she will meet with campaign volunteers next Wednesday, but gave no other details. She last visited Pennsylvania in April.

The Philadelphia School District School Reform Commission voted unanimously and passed a budget for the next school year. Protestors were angry because they say the $2.5 billion budget shortchanges students; it simply is not enough, they argue, to educate the city’s children. The district says it’s doing what it can with what it has. State budget cuts and the end of additional federal stimulus dollars have forced hundreds of millions in cuts the last two years. SRC officials also noted, the approved spending plan does not include any school closings. Officials say the district’s re-organization plan to close 64 schools over five years will be finalized in the coming year with input from the public. The open union talks are also set to continue as scheduled.

A SEPTA worker has died after being shot several times while on his way to work early Thursday morning at 71st Street and Elmwood Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia. 52-year-old Aaron Hayes was heading to work at the Elmwood and Island Station when he was shot three times, including once in the head, neck and arm. Hayes was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities say they believe Hayes was targeted; the shooting suspect was a white male and the getaway car, a black and gray Mitsubishi, was driven by a white female. So far, no one is in custody and police have not determined a motive. Police are analyzing surveillance footage from cameras at nearby establishments.
