Tonight's big winners are country crossover stars Lady Antebellum, powered by their song "Need You Now". They took home 5 little record player statues, including both Song and Record of the Year. Somehow they got to perform that song 2 years in a row on the show. Arguably, last year's performance launched them on the road to success this past year.
Other big winners include Philly's own The Roots, whose collaborative work with John Legend earned 3 awards in R&B categories. The Black Keys won 3 awards for Rock Performance by Group, Alternative Album, and Best Recording Package! Lady Gaga took home a couple including Best Female Pop Vocal, and Bruno Mars won Best Male Pop Vocal. Also, in the Best Tropical Latin Album category Spanish Harlem Orchestra won for Viva La Tradicion. They've won previous Grammys after working and recording out of Studio 4 Recording with Phil Nicolo in Conshohocken, so it's nice to see them continue to have success.
Now there were a couple of 'upsets' in big categories, or rather, wins by artists that many may not know. First, in Best New Artist the award went to Esperanza Spalding. Now, after you are done saying "Who!?" Please listen to her below. A tremendous jazz talent. Justin Bieber is going to have to earn a Grammy in a big boy category next time. Remember, these things are voted on by the 12,000 or so people involved in making music, not little girls with pink sparkly phones and twitter addictions. Although, I'd have gone with Mumford & Sons over Ms. Spalding.
The second surprise, is Album of the Year. "The Suburbs" by Arcade Fire took the prize. Well, ok to introduce, they're an avant garde alternative rock band based in Montreal. This album did debut at #1 when it went on sale and did bump Eminem off the top of the charts. I had it as my favorite album of 2010, so I agree, but its not everyone's cup of tea or sizzurp.
Anyway, what do you think of the winners? Who should have won instead? What did you think of the show? Did Cee Lo steal your prom dress idea? Were you waiting for Smith and Bieber to get slimed, because you thought you were watching Nickelodeon?
