Bob Welch, an early member of Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974, was found dead Thursday in his apartment in Nashville. His body was discovered by his wife with a single gunshot wound to the chest and suicide note.

Welch joined Fleetwood Mac after the departure of founding members Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. He played guitar and was a vocalist, contributing to five of the band's albums. Fleetwood Mac would gain most of their fame and success later after Welch had left and with the additions of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. A squabble over royalties in the 90's left him out of the band for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1998.

Welch released his debut solo record, "French Kiss" in 1977 which went platinum and had the hits "Sentimental Lady," "Ebony Eyes" and "Hot Love, Cold World."

Bob Welch had health problems, including a recent spinal surgery, which may account for his frame of mind. He was 66.
