Black bears have been making some public appearances in South Jersey this past week, unnerving area residents. The latest siting was in Shamong Township, Burlington County at the Oakview trailer park. A resident saw the bear eating from her bird feeder, but had retreated by the time police arrived. On Wednesday, a bear was spotted in Waterford Township, Camden County eating trash before retreating back into the woods, but causing the Waterford elementary school principal to lockdown the school. A resident of the Highbridge Development in Medford Township, also reported a bear sighting on Thursday. All three townships border the Wharton State Forest. Black bears are native to New Jersey, but are usually found in the northern parts of the state. Recent population increases may have caused them to move south. The Department of Environmental Protection has asked people to remain on alert and call police if a bear is spotted, even though these recent sightings haven't been aggressive they can be if provoked.

On Friday evening, the driver of a illegal dirt bike slammed into the side of a minivan in the city's Hunting Park section of the city. Two children in the minivan were injured as well as the driver of the dirt bike. The small children were cut by broken glass, the biker was taken to the hospital with injuries to his head, back, and neck. Illegal ATV's and dirt bikes are an increasingly dangerous problem on our city's streets.

Owners and operators of such vehicles are first off doing so with unregistered vehicles not fit for the street (brakes lights, headlights, turn signals, mirrors, etc.). Secondly, many drivers are underage kids or others who do not even have a license to drive or otherwise shouldn't be operating a motor vehicle. Finally, when they do get on the roads they do not adhere to any traffic laws and tend to operate the vehicles recklessly. This can only lead to serious accidents. Off-road vehicles need to seriously be removed and fines and/or confiscations for offenders enforced or else people will be injured or die.

Police are asking anyone who sees illegal dirt bikes or ATVs riding in the area to text “PPDTIP” or email tips@PhillyPolice.com. You can also sign the change.org petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/remove-illegal-atv-and-dirt-bikes-from-philadelphia
