Taco Bell takes cue from Demolition Man; Offering a Gourmet Cantina Menu

In 1993's "Demolition Man" starring Sylvester Stalone and Wesley Snipes, Stalone plays a reckless but effective police sergeant (John Spartan) who is pursuing a dangerous and equally destructive criminal (Simon Phoenix) played by Snipes. After a 1996 incident where a warehouse full of hostages is left leveled in an explosion, both Spartan and Phoenix are sentenced to a new cryoprison where the are frozen. Fast forward to 2032, Phoenix escapes during a parole hearing and Spartan is thawed out to chase him down.

In the future, this dystopian society has virtually eliminated crime and police are ill equipped at dealing with a menace like Phoenix. Almost everything is illegal including sex, physical contact, cursing, and anything unhealthy. (hmmm I see a trend already with big sodas, cigarettes, and trans-fats, anyway) After a devastating earthquake in 2012, the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego were merged into a megalopolis of San Angeles.

According to the plot, the only restaurant to survive the "franchise wars" was Taco Bell and now every restaurant is Taco Bell. It is considered an honor when Spartan is invited by the founder of San Angeles, Dr. Raymond Cocteau, because it is now an upscale gourmet restaurant.

Now just in time for science fiction predictions to match reality, starting July 5th our Taco Bell is going to start to offer it's own gourmet menu called the Cantina Menu. It will feature the Cantina Bowl and Cantina Burrito. These two come in in chicken, steak, and veggie options. They were created by chef Lorena Garcia who was featured on NBC “America’s Next Great Restaurant” and will appear on the new season of Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters” July 25. Cantina Bell will feature eight new ingredients for Taco Bell such as whole black beans, cilantro rice, 100-percent all-white meat chicken in a citrus and herb marinade, guacamole made with 100-percent Hass avocado, fire-roasted corn salsa, creamy cilantro dressing, romaine lettuce and pico de gallo. It is backed by a “guarantee”—if consumers don’t love it, Taco Bell will replace it.

This would give Taco Bell customers a options more in line with fare found at Baja Fresh, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Qdoba Mexican Grill.

Let's just hope that only some these more benign similarities are all that manifest themselves from the movie, and hopefully none of the totalitarian or authoritarian craziness.
