Philadelphia Police Officer Dies, Delco SPCA Seeks Donations For Starved Dog, Sandusky Trial

A Philadelphia Police officer who collided with a vehicle while riding his motorcycle last week died last night. The crash happened last Friday at the intersection of Broad and Master streets in North Philadelphia and left 28-year-old Milan Merke in extremely critical condition. The 35th District officer, who was off-duty at the time of the crash, was riding with Midnight Run for Peace to promote anti-violence.

The Delaware County SPCA is looking for donations for the care of an extremely malnourished dog that was found in a Chester home last week. The 3-year-old female pit bull mix, now named Precious, was found in a flea and feces infested basement inside the Chester home after a hot water heater in the basement burst. Repair workers found the emaciated dog—who weighed only 19 pounds.

After an investigation, Precious’ former owner was cited with two animal cruelty offenses: failure to provide sustenance and failure to provide veterinary care on Thursday afternoon. The SPCA determined that Precious was deliberately starved and neglected. It was also reported by witnesses that Precious had a mother that was the victim of the same neglect and died in the owner’s basement a couple years ago.

Anyone interested in donating to Precious’ care can donate at http://delcospca.org/donations/ or by sending a check to the Delco SPCA at 555 Sandy Bank Road in Media, PA 19063. Checks can be made out to the Delaware County SPCA, with a note that the funds are for Precious’ care.

Three more accusers took the stand at Jerry Sandusky’s sex-abuse trial Thursday, one of whom said the former Penn State assistant football coach called himself the “tickle monster” before embracing him in a shower and another who said he was forced into sex acts during more than a hundred nights he spent in the ex-coach’s home. A state investigator also testified that authorities heard about a key witness, assistant coach Mike McQueary, through an anonymous email to Centre County prosecutors. The investigator, Anthony Sassano, said authorities identified some of Jerry Sandusky’s alleged abuse victims through pictures and lists seized from his home and office and that the university was “not very quick” in getting investigators information as part of the probe.
