Occupy Philadelphia Protest, GlaxoSmithKline $3 Billion Settlement, Archdiocese CFO Pleads Guilty

Occupy Philadelphia's National Gathering joined with disgruntled unionized workers from Verizon to protest through Center City streets during rush hour Monday afternoon. Verizon workers have been without a contract for a year and protested outside a corporate office at 11th and Market, where Occupy Philadelphia joined them for a march up to the Comcast Tower and to Senator Pat Toomey’s office. Occupy groups also spent time in Franklin Square where they had programmed teach-ins and speakers included Rolling Stone political writer Matt Talibi.

GlaxoSmithKline LLC will pay $3 billion and plead guilty to promoting two popular drugs for unapproved uses and to failing to disclose important safety information on a third in the largest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history. Accompanying the criminal case was a civil settlement in which the government said the company’s improper marketing included providing doctors with expensive resort vacations, European hunting trips, high-paid speaking tours and even tickets to a Madonna concert.

A former financial executive of the Philadelphia archdiocese will be sentenced next month in the theft of more than $900,000 from the church. Forty-two-year-old Anita Guzzardi of Haddon Neights, N.J. pleaded guilty Friday to charges of theft by deception, unlawful use of a computer and forgery. Guzzardi used hundreds of church checks to pay personal credit card bills from 2005 to 2011. The investigation began after American Express contacted authorities.
