Kenney Blasts Chick Fill A, Maldonado Killer Caught, Philadelphia Firefighters March On City Hall

Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney is joining those blasting the head of the fast food chain Chick fil A for his comments against gay marriage. Dan Cathy, the Baptist president of the fast food chain last week denounced gay marriage on a radio show, saying he supports the Biblical definition of a family unit. Kenney's letter is just one voice in a national backlash against the fast-food chain. Gay-rights groups have planned a “kiss-in” at Chick-fil-A restaurants next week.

Anjeanette Maldonado, in 1996, was attacked on her way to school, and was found strangled in an abandoned home in the 1700 block of North Hope Street. A few days ago, a detective from the Philadelphia Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, called the family to tell them the accused killer was caught. The suspect, 45-year-old Rafael Crespo, was identified through DNA methods not available in 1996. Crespo is already behind bars, serving 25 years for rape, in a Florida prison.

The Philadelphia firefighters’ union Thursday took advantage of the national firefighters’ convention here to bring reinforcements to their demand for a new contract. The union wants the city to accept an arbitrator’s award, but the city is considering an appeal.
Thursday afternoon, the union pressed its case with a march and rally at City Hall. Mayor Nutter is away. He has until August 3rd to decide on an appeal.
